Ambitions’ start is one that is definitely not of the norm, since the Connecticut-based group began with members Jay Aust and John Ross switching instruments (Jay went from guitar to vocals and John went from drums to bass). One would think the shift would create an odd or cumbersome writing/vocal style that would not translate into solid song structures, but that is far from the case with Stranger. Along with brother Jeff Aust (guitar), Ambitions have created a punk hardcore sound that is reminiscent of Quicksand and a vocal style similar to Death By Stereo. There are hardcore sing-alongs like opener “The Illusion” as well as softer numbers like “Culmination (of My Life’s Work),” all in all creating a flow with little to no letdown. Stanger is proof that change can be a good thing.
