Behemoth have had a career that has seen them rise as a black metal band and transform into a technical death metal act while still retaining a little bit of their original identity. Sure, the sound may have changed, but the efforts have remained persistent and evil. The only question that remained was, “Are Behemoth going to be able to continue the momentum they gained with Demigod?” That question is answered with one listen to the devastatingly blasphemous Polish power created on The Apostasy. The use of a choir and horn section on songs such as “At the Left Hand ov God,” “Pazuzu,” and the piano on “Inner Sanctum” add an eerie presence that has not been heard on any other Behemoth album to date. The addition of Warrel Dane’s (Nevermore) vocals on standout “Inner Sanctum” also adds a touch of melody. While this is one of the slower songs – still as fast as religion to a dollar, though – it sends a chill down your back, and the sound is as intimidating as seeing Behemoth live.
The Apostasy – which translates to the state of having forsaken one's professed belief set, often in favor of opposing beliefs – is the perfect title to fit the lyrical content. With songs like “Christgrinding Avenue” and "Slaying the Prophets ov Isa" (Isa is the Arabic name for Jesus), Behemoth are on a mission to crush the religious beliefs that are so prevalent in their homeland and abroad. The Apostasy is dynamic, aggressive, and will be sure to keep old fans happy and add a few more apostles along the way.
