The death / thrash metal of one Johan Lindstrand and cohorts is rather effective. No one can deny its power and the dynamic way in which this army agrees on its strategy. Yet, you’d have to be a lover of all things generic to champion it to high heavens and a fool with two bad ears to regard it as “totally crushing” or “groundbreaking.” In other words, there are good ideas here, but not one gets out of the “more done than a porn star’s ass” rubric. “The Supreme Butcher,” only the fourth cut, sounds like a rehash of the previous three. And the previous three sound like a rehash of 21st Century Killing Machine. In other words, One Man Army And The Undead Quartet sound like it’s covering itself.
On the theme, the title Error in Evolution might be very telling. Is it directly stating that if The Undead Quartet were to sound any different from its older material, it would be an error? Or is it poising a deeper kind of question? One in which theology plays a larger role and diverging individual beliefs are only bound to end in bloodshed? I could give two shits, because I really wish this band had evolved at least a little bit. The style doesn’t have to change, but musically a band can take a step forward and display it via elevated songwriting. Unfortunately with tunes as boring as “See Them Burn,” this undead quartet seems a bit too content with the material contained in their previous record and have crafted a mere rehash with different lyrics and a rancid cover of Alice Cooper’s “He’s Back (The Man Behind the Mask).”
