Good things come in small packages, so they say, and it’s hard to get too much smaller of a package than four songs in 14 minutes. But this digital-only debut EP from DC’s Deleted Scenes is indeed a good thing. It’s concise, catchy, and well-written; a happy little dose of tuneful, smart indie rock of the kind that’s hard to come by these days. These guys remind me of the more focused late-career moments of the late, great Dismemberment Plan, with just enough quirk and complexity in the arrangements to make things interesting. I’d like to hear them amp up a little bit and rock out more, as the energetic closer “He Just Doesn’t Get It” is easily the EP’s high point. And four three-minute tracks, honestly, isn’t a lot to go on. But all in all, I’d say it’s a promising start for a solid band. Hopefully Deleted Scenes will stick around and do a full-length. I’m backing these dudes.
