Power metal: nothing more, nothing less.

TransformOnline - Music Review

Soaring melodies and epic power metal are the order of the day with The 8th Sin. Nothing more, nothing less.

Metal Maniacs described Nocturnal Rites as “the power metal band for people who don’t like power metal,” but judging by The 8th Sin, it just doesn’t ring true. While Nocturnal Rites do produce some well-played and adequately written power metal, there really isn’t anything here that allows the band to stand out amongst the stiff competition of progressive melodic metal. There’s nothing here that separates them from the rest, really. Blind Guardian have them beat in epic songwriting, Dragonforce outplay them, and Dream Evil and Hammerfall are both way more over the top.

If you are dying for more power metal with a progressive tinge, you could do a lot worse than Nocturnal Rites. The tracks are good, the performances solid, and Jonny Lindqvist has a fairly decent voice. Fans of the aforementioned bands should find a lot to enjoy: all the required elements of Euro-power metal are here. However, don’t expect The 8th Sin to amaze (or in my case, convert) you.
