When you usually think of DJ compilations, you think of crazy 75-minute mixes where famed DJs enter into mortal combat-like battles with one another. From L.A. With Love is a complete horse of a different color. The primary and preferred genre found on this disc is indeed electronica, but you wouldn’t know it if someone had piped it in on the mains at your favorite club. Any one of these tracks reveals a DJ harkening back to some other genre: from Greenwich Village psychedelia to jazz-tinged Fender Rhodes keyboard runs. “All the Shallow Deep” by Nobody Presents: Blank Blue evokes Barbarella–esque imagery, where scantily clad women saunter about in form-constricting clothing (see: the latest American Apparel ads for a good idea of the kind of clothing I’m trying to describe). There are even post-'67 backward guitars effects and soothing female vocals, reminiscent of Stereolab’s Laetitiea Saedler.
Artdontsleep, another famed collective from the West Coast, curated the textures heard on From L.A. With Love, and the idea is to shed some light on artists, producers, and DJs who rarely get any publicity. The collection reveals a scene based around creating a backbeat-laden groove that is as mood evocative as it is off-beat and intriguing. Even if the music isn’t fodder for everyone’s cannon, you have to at lease tip your hat off to this noble goal.
