TransformOnline - Music Review

Static-X are one of the most recognizable bands of the past decade. If you don’t necessary know their music, you will definitely know their frontman, Wayne Static. He is the guy who has used more haircare products than all of Flock Of Seagulls combined. His black hair stands straight up like a city building. If you don’t know their music or haven’t listened to them since their platinum debut Wisconsin Death Trip, it is time to start paying attention again.

Static-X have picked up the level a few notches by taking it to a back to basics writing style. First, they parted ways with long time producer Ulrich Wild and inserted John Travis next to Wayne Static. Second, they decided to make this album without even telling their record label, turning in a finished product that didn’t have any outside influences. And last but not least, they made it a more guitar driven thrash album without straying too far from the techo programming sound they have created. Cannibal is intensity at its finest from the crush of the first note, and will pull in anyone who feeds off of powerful and churning riffs.

Lyrically, Wayne took a different approach as well. In the past, songs have been written around life experiences. On Cannibal, he came up with the song titles first and worked from there. The title track is about someone ripping and tearing through a steak and how it is not too far from being a cannibal. Just insert some human flesh! “Destroyer,” which has a killer video placed in a roller derby game, is about someone who shows up to a party or social event and completely ruins the mood. “Chroma-tic” is simply about tuning a guitar and the anticipation of plugging in and cranking out some powerful riffs.

Static-X have coined themselves “evil disco”… if this is what disco sounded like, I would have been listening a long time ago. Cannibal’s beats and guitar work have taken me from being anything but a fan to exactly that. This is by far the band’s best work too date. Prepare to be eaten alive!
