They Can Sing, They Can Sing, They Can Sing Underwater is one of those records that is brilliant but unbearable to listen to at the same time. I hate to say it, but it's true. I found the musicianship absolutely intriguing, as well as the lyricism, vocal tonality, and melodies. As I listened to each song, I was amazed at how dynamic it was. However, I was also ready for it to be over. I know this might sound disparaging, but on the contrary I actually like what Amestory are trying to accomplish. I just don't want to listen to it again.
It is akin to driving cross country: when you finally reach the Pacific, the last thing you want to do is get in the car and drive back. The journey was delightful – with lots of fascinating sights, some of which were bold while others were subtle – yet now that it’s done and I have some great memories of the trip, I don't need to do it again. That is how this EP feels when you are listening to it: it is such a delightful trip, but at the journey's end: you’re done.
This isn't an attempt to discourage you from listening to this EP, but rather a comment on the music's unintended effect. I can guarantee you won’t feel unfulfilled: it is a good listen. Take a journey and see for yourself. Who knows? Maybe I'm wrong or maybe I like my music to be simple and repetitious, and this is definitely not that.
