What can you say about an album that makes you feel like you’ve said it all before? Every time I try to sift through If the Ocean Gets Rough, I only come up with a few things: 1) This is a well played album. 2) This is a well recorded album. 3) The musicians are good. Other than that, I got nothing. But you fine readers demand more, so I will give to you, diggin’ deep from within my soul, if only coming up with more bland singer/songwriter adjectives.
Other than the nice pacing, If the Ocean Gets Rough is just boring: sliding around at the same tempo for far too long. I literally fell asleep while I was driving home from work one afternoon listening to this disc, and the worst part is that this was during the worst traffic. I could have crashed the car. It actually might’ve been fitting, because the music can sometimes be beautiful and tragic… but I just don’t find it all that heartfelt, since I’ve heard a sea of millions do the same thing better (i.e. Mark Kozelck).
In a nutshell, Willy Mason plays alt-folk indie rock. You may love it, I don’t hate it, I just don’t want to get in a car accident. I got five kids to feed.
