Through steady driving rhythms and solid bass lines, The Poison Arrows create brooding atmospheres on Straight into the Drift. And while all songs include vocals, the feel of the music is much more instrumental, and indeed there are jam-like passages on each track. The occasional synthesizers attempt to add to the ambiance, but end up falling short of their goal. And though the added loops and electronics are admirable, they take away from the core sound of the band. The Poison Arrows would sound better with more concentration on vocals and guitars (turn ‘em up!).
This EP is not a bad release. There are promising songs being created here, and I look forward to the upcoming full-length. It just seems like The Poison Arrows strayed a bit too far and lost a bit of their solidity. But hey, there’s no better time to experiment than on an EP, right?
