Blessthefall site bands such as As I Lay Dying, Underoath, and Alexisonfire as influences: I can see that right away. But “aspects of pop, hip-hop, rap, and even R&B?” Nope. If there was any of that in here, I sure must’ve missed it. But then again, I was too busy trying to ignore the whiny emo-boy, balls-in-a-vice singing. The “singing” on this record is not only god awful, but totally out of place. I know everyone and their brother is doing that dual vocal, singer/screamer thing, but these guys should skip it. The angry screamed/growled vocals work MUCH better on their own. Not that they are really unique or anything, but they are certainly more appropriate. Now, the instrumental work is a whole other story: ignore the vocals and this album will seriously kick your ass. The songs are all really well written and performed: lots of energy, with the drumming particularly good. It’s the perfect soundtrack for violence: makes me wanna break stuff and start fires. Beavis and Butthead would love it.
So this is one of those toss up records… I don’t know if I can 100% recommend it due to the vocals, but if you can find a used copy or maybe download a few songs from iTunes, then that may be the way to go. The one really good thing these guys have going for them is their youth. They’ve got plenty of time to evolve, and I’m optimistic that they’ll rethink the vocals on their next release.
