Recorded in Oulu, Finland in 2005, this final concert captures the energy of Sentenced’s live performances, as well as those of the crowd, adeptly. Their usual gloomy, doom/goth metal is brightened by a lively performance that makes you wonder why they decided to break up in the first place (though I suppose every band would want to end on a high note such as this).
Sonically, the recording is clean and clear but with too much emphasis on Ville Laihaila’s somewhat less-impressive vocals. While the music itself is less than dynamic (given their chose genre), I felt it could use a bit more punch. Never mind that I’ve never been a fan of Laihaila’s voice (it oftentimes feels like a poor-man’s Peter Steele). Ville also tends to chat a bit in between songs, which is normally fine. But as this was recorded in Finland, it’s all in Finnish! Great thing for the native fans, but it ends up being just boring chatter for everyone else.
In the end, it’s just too much Sentenced. For band I was never a fan of, 26 live tracks is a bit excessive. However, for the loyal, Buried Alive is a must have. The quality of the recording and the depth of material on display are impressive and certainly show a lot of care for the listener.
Like many “last live albums,” Sentenced could’ve done a half-assed job for a quick cash-in, banking on the inevitable reunion. But rather we get a lovingly crafted epic concert that flows well, sounds great, and leaves a lasting impression, even if you aren’t a regular listener. Coupled with their proclamation that there will be absolutely no reunions (though who’s to say), this is your last chance to hear them at their best.
