Nathan "Key Principles" (Nettwerk)

Perfectly good country folk: just not my cup of tea.

TransformOnline - Music Review

Nathan are a country tinged lite-rock band for well adjusted young couples to listen to as their toddlers smile, drool, and do cute baby things. It’s, “Hey honey! It’s Sunday. Let’s clean the house and then maybe go take Chad and Amy out for a stroll” kind of music. At least to my ears. Not exactly the soundtrack for the mini-van militia, but Dad has an iPod, and this is on it next to the latest Son Volt.

My ears don’t respond to this happy shit. My ears like Hank Williams and Townes Van Zandt and Merle Haggard. I know, I’m a morose motherfucker. That’s what drew me to country in the first place: it’s supposed to be fuckin’ sad music.

But let’s stick with Nathan. Two chicks, two dudes. Canadian. Very well crafted, pleasant songs. Good two-part harmonies from the ladies. Arranged well. Played well. Everything’s fine, it just doesn’t bleed and reek of sorrow, misplaced aggression and despair the way real country should.

Tim posted the following Constructive Criticism: So why didn't you just say THAT instead of your original attempt at defining the boundaries of "good journalism?" Would've saved all of us time.
helen posted the following Constructive Criticism: whoa. just giving some constructive criticism there dude. ari claims not to like anything that aint morose so it seems to me there was no way for him to like it.
Tim posted the following Constructive Criticism: Wow, and I guess you, Ms. Procyshyn, define good journalism as being able to predict EXACTLY what your reviewer will or will not like. Apparently clicking on Ari's profile and seeing for yourself that he's extremely well-versed in folk and country was conveniently too troublesome for you. How nice. Ari understands what Nathan are trying to do, thus he is the right person to review it. He just didn't like it as much as other artists of the same genre. Deal with it.
helen procyshyn posted the following Constructive Criticism: Re: Ari Joffe's review of Nathan - Key Principles Well if its well crafted, but not Ari's cup of tea, then Ari is not the right person to be reviewing the disc. I think you would do better to give dics to reviewers who at least are fans of the music and then they can review it for quality as it should be. This is a pointless piece of journalism.
