“Darling you are like alcohol in a teenager,” croons vocalist / songwriter Jeffery Siler of Clemente. No surprise, given that his band is of the alt-country sort. After listening to this disc a few times, I originally thought that I was going to be downing on it, but with time I eventually became pleasantly surprised by the skills of the songwriting.
…Whilst Honey Hums flows rather easily, especially after a couple of focused listening sessions. At first, like I said earlier, it could be a hard one to swallow, but if you are a fan of Uncle Tupelo, then trust that you’re in the right hands. Most of this album’s chords and solos could really be carved out of U.T.’s back catalog, or even most token bands of this nature. I want to highlight certain standout tracks, but …Whilst Honey Hums really is one of those “sit down and listen from beginning to end” type of records. It tries to convey a lot: the words are real and honest, and that is something that is rare when most just want to fill the typical bridge or verse with something quick. In fact, the songs seem designed for what Siler has to say, and that’s a huge compliment because – if not for such a characteristic – I probably wouldn’t be listening to this much, instead handing it to my buddy the Centro-Matic / Dolorean super fan.
Good alt-country is a thing that has gone away from me for sometime now, but once in a while I catch a glimpse of greatness in a new act. I would guess that a future release from Celemente will probably warrant further examination.
