Because I am done crying about old girlfriends, because I have heard this brand of music a hundred other times, because a lot of really bad musicians will aspire to sound just like Copeland, because these guys hold such a high stance in the emo-trying-to-be-indie crowd already overpopulated with crap. I recommend you and your high school buddies buy this album if you and your regret-filled sad nights need more crying into your grandma’s quilt and listening to more of the same guitar effects and xylophones and piano that sound so “refreshing and new,” but really are not.
Sound harsh? Okay, I’m sorry. I am just being honest, and if that’s not what you want, don’t read this review. Go to someone else who’s going to praise the hell out of Copeland, cuz truth is it will happen. Somewhere on the same rising monotone horizon where Copeland’s vocalist croons at, some editor and his staff of indie hopefuls will fall in love with Eat, Sleep, Repeat. People will buy this record and love it, and people will hate me for being so rude in this review. For them I’m sorry: I like music you probably hate, and that’s okay, cuz I don’t hate you for loving this band or hating me. It’s your prerogative. I just didn’t like Eat, Sleep, Repeat at all. In high school, or maybe when I got my wee 21 year-old heartbroken, I might’ve, but now I care less than ever.
I like a couple songs enough to say “Love Affair” and “I’m a Sucker For a Kind Word” are the closest to what I would spin if I was trying to get laid in a post-high school emo phase. So for you guys currently there, and you guys who are too cool to admit you are, keep these titles in mind.
When my editor first got this disc to me, I popped it in knowing that I didn’t like Copeland but hoped that maybe my opinion would change. It did not. My wife, on the other hand, loved it. So take my word, or take all the other people’s words who love this band: take Eat, Sleep, Repeat and run with it. Far far far away from me.
