France has given the United States the Statue of Library, Tony Parker, and were smart enough to see through President Bush’s bullshit and not support the war in Iraq. Now the nation is continuing to make smart moves, giving the U.S. great bands like Gojira. Gojira formed in a garage in the southwestern French town of Bayonne, led by the Duplantier brothers Joe and Mario. Originally dubbed Godzilla, the band changed their name to avoid lawsuits. After building up a following throughout France and Europe, Gojira’s second album From Mars to Sirius is finally being released in the States.
These guys are one of the most unique bands to come across my ears in a long time. They cannot be defined in a musical genre other than “heavy.” Gojira have elements that recall Mastodon, Strapping Young Lad, and Morbid Angel, but they sound nothing like any of those bands. Their music contains mid-paced grooves and occasional mellow moments as well as crushing riffs, but they are an entity unto themselves. From Mars to Sirius will have you humming songs in your head, as well as (hopefully) become more environmentally aware. When was the last time you listened to a metal album with whale sounds on it? And instead of making you say “what the fuck is this?”, Gojira make it work. The band have broken the mold and made a great album at the same time.
