When it comes to music, I am fully supportive of artists trying new and different things. And no matter how strange or abrasive the product is, I give full respect to those who truly think outside of the box. But every so often, something comes along that is so markedly strange or abrasive that my focus changes. No longer do I ask whether or not the artist is producing something different: I ask whether or not the product is actually music.
While Have You Seen the Other Side of the Sky? isn’t quite abnormal enough to fit into that category of “music,” it definitely comes close. To the average listener, Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. sound like they can’t play their instruments (all you need is an electric guitar, a distortion pedal, and a wah pedal to make sounds like this). My guess is that they are so bored with common musical conventions that they decided to scrap them all. They use two basic song types: the “let’s play as fast as we can and as many notes as possible without paying any attention to each other” type of song, and the “let’s break it down and use an acoustic guitar and have trippy, out of tune vocals over it” type of song. My first big complaint is the electronic noises that grace nearly every second of this hour-long extravaganza. If you’ve ever seen Forbidden Planet, think of the soundtrack. Second big complaint: the production. Too much reverb! Not only is the music confusing to begin with, but the reverb that’s been added makes it considerably muddier. Maybe my brain just isn’t big enough, but I just can’t handle it.
So let me warn all you fans of the new and different: it doesn’t always work. While most of us already realize this, I’m just here to give you a heads up. Have You Seen the Other Side of the Sky? just doesn’t work.
