Do you have a tendency to care more about musical integrity than the fruits of commercial success?
Do you like ‘80s new wave music?
Does French pop annoy you?
Is the choice between Joy Division and Interpol an obvious one for you?
Do you prefer the creation of a cohesive “album” to the “singles + filler = product” mentality?
Are you sick to death of disposable art?
If you have answered yes to more than two of these questions, chances are you will not be the slightest bit interested in Nouvelle Vague’s latest cover album Bande a Part. The band have set a yuppie trap with their smooth Getz/Gilberto meets ‘80s pop feel on this forgettable record, in hopes of penetrating the Planet Starbucks generation. How much more obvious can you be than releasing a second absurdly digestible album dominated by hit songs from an era that is fashionable at the moment? Bande a Part is a picture perfect example of an album for yuppie consumption, which has little to nothing to offer outside of inspiring one to go back and listen to the originals. Technically speaking, the production is solid. The vocalists have decent voices and the arrangements prove to be acceptable for this format. So, why then not hire a decent songwriter as well, instead of riding on the coattails of a handful of old gems? Have you no shame?
