Scanners are one of those bands that you can’t believe aren’t selling millions of records. They possess all of the qualities one would need to achieve such a task: instrumental talent, a deep appreciation for all that is rock and roll, a leader with both voice and look, and choruses that imbed themselves deep into to the listener’s subconscious. So why haven’t you heard of them until now? I’m not sure, but I can tell you one thing: put a song like “Low Life” on the radio (just one of the exceptionably marketable songs on Violence is Golden) and records will sell.
Although Scanners’ debut doesn’t completely match up to my personal listening tastes, the high quality musicianship is, even upon first listen, immediately evident. While the band’s frequent use of synthesizers reflects an obvious admiration of ‘80s pop, one need not reach far to hear a wide variety of influences. Backed up by a solid rhythm section, the guitars and keyboards are used to create a variety of moods that range anywhere from lush walls of sound to more angular beats and riffs. The end result will remind many listeners of bands like Bloc Party or The Killers, with one key ingredient added: a beautiful female voice. Talented in both performance and composition, the singer, in my opinion, truly carries the band and ties all the ends together.
If radio was a lesser beast, it would welcome Scanners with open arms. Alas, it was never meant to be, and here we crawl through the internet in search of new and exciting music. Luckily, there are many gems to be found, and although Scanners weren’t a life-changing experience for me, I really believe that they have the potential to change many.
