With Night Moves, Lisa Papineau invites all to tip toe down to an eclectic place where she sews the seeds of jazz, funk, rock, and electro-pop together in a strangely enticing way. Clever arrangements carry these 11 songs through the album’s many styles in a seamless manner, giving it an engaging momentum without overtly strong songwriting. Opener “Out to You” sets the aesthetic tone immediately with its delicate sonic interaction between the bass and chiming Rhodes, showing Papineau’s emphasis on mixing the familiar to create something unique. However, some of the more interesting moments on this record come when Papineu takes a break from the “melting pot” method and focuses more on laying down a straight-up pop song. Among the more complicated tracks, the electro-pop driven “Power and Glory Part One,” “Power and Glory Part Two,” and “LP Beat” are the best examples of this, proving to be attention grabbers with their simple forms and catchy melodies. I would also like to mention that while Night Moves does indeed feel natural drawing from many styles, it might have benefited from some slimming down as far as the stylistic range of all the songs. The weak points of this album are the funky “Shucking. Jiving” and “Call Me Frenchy” – which seem a bit forced than the others in the bunch – and the sometimes questionable songwriting and lyrics. All in all, an interesting effort showing an artist making the most of what she has to offer.
