Yet another teaser to hold us off until the next full-length (see Neon Blonde and Head Wound City), Love Rhymes With Hideous Car Wreck delivers a number of b-sides, alternate takes, and live versions for us to gnaw on while we wait.
As a whole, this EP is actually quite enjoyable. One of the two b-sides, “Metronomes,” shows The Blood Brothers experimenting with less conventional instrumentation, taking a step away from screeching guitars and crashing drums. A remix of “Peacock Skeleton With Crooked Feathers” provides an almost dub-like version of the song (originally off of Crimes). Also included is what I believe to be the highlight of the release: a remix/cover of Gang Of Four’s “Anthrax.” Using only the original vocal line, the Brothers dubbed over another two layers of vocals, plus two drum tracks, a new bass line, and tons of feedback a la the original. Both appropriate in theme and in sound, this remix really made the EP worth listening to.
Finishing up with a live version of the title track, The Blood Brothers’ newest release leaves us wanting more. Though I would only recommend it for fans, Love Rhymes With Hideous Car Wreck holds its own surprisingly well.
