For the first time in the band's career, a cohesive musical arc.

TransformOnline - Music Review

How We Operate is a return to form for the talented Gomez. The Mercury Prize-winning musicians took a while to find themselves after the fallout of their disappointing last album, Split the Difference. To mitigate the damage, they did three things: One, they landed a new label. Two, they got a hot producer. Three, they discovered a newfound focus in their art. On most of Gomez’s previous releases, the band experimented with many different musical styles and sounds. On certain moments from Liquid Skin and Bring it On, the results were brilliant. On others… not so much. With How We Operate, their focus has brought forth their most cohesive musical effort in years. The songs, for the first time in the history of the band’s impressive back catalogue, actually have a thematic arc to them instead of the band’s famous tangential indulgences. The album opens with “Notice,” a song that reminds you to take Gomez seriously. The melody is tight, the rhythm ebbs and flows, and the harmonies entice you to keep listening. “Girlshapedlovedrug” reminds you of how much fun British music actually is, and “All Too Much” reminds you that Gomez can rock! How We Operate is the band’s best album in years and should help them win over another legion of fans.
