As much as At The Gates deserve a debt of gratitude for their groundbreaking work, the amount of imitators and failed attempts to recreate the Gothenburg Sound is getting fucking ridiculous! While Neaera do not completely rip off their influences, they are damn close to doing so. Yes, Let the Tempest Come has some groove, but it is the same chords that can be heard on dozens of other releases. Yes, they are talented musicians, but with the intricacies of metal these days it’s a pre-requisite: otherwise you would not be able to hack it. Yes, “The Crimson Void” has an awesome intro, but the rest of the album is as redundant as every other metalcore / whatever-you-want-to-call-it these days. As Roadrunner A&R man Monte Conner once said about his early ‘90s death metal signings, “We would sign almost anybody because we knew it would sell.” Well, Metal Blades already has The Black Dahlia Murder, and now Neaera can be added to the list because it will probably sell. Harsh? Sure, but sometimes the truth hits you over the head with a cinder block and kicks you when you are down.
