I was initially interested in what Upon Infliction would sound like, since guitarist Gus Rios has written material in the past for one of the original Florida death metals acts, Malevolent Creation. I was impressed with opener “Order,” but after it the album seemed to offer little variation. I could not tell where one track ended and another began. Although the music is heavy and brutal, it became flat and repetitive by the end of the album. Now I know why I have not listened to Malevolent Creation since they released Eternal way back in 1995. Upon Infliction are standard death metal, although they have been tagged as technical. But if you want technical death metal, go for bands like Necrophagist or Decapitated. The highlight of To Escape is to Suffer is “Rage,” which has a bit of variation with elements that could come off the fingers of Trey Azagthoth or Erik Rutan. Other than that, Upon Infliction are an infliction on the ears.
