This has been a really difficult review to write… I’ve been on such a mellow music kick that I’ve had a hard time sitting down to listen to Home all the way through. And that’s weird, because it’s so damn good. Instrumentally, Home is one of the best albums I’ve heard in a while. Recorded on analog tape using clean guitar tones, you’d hardly expect the explosive result this band has achieved. And luckily, it’s not just creative studio techniques that make this album a success. They’re talented composers as well, so there’s little not to like!
Really, my biggest (only) issue with the album is the vocals. Now, I’m all for screaming or screeching or even the occasional cookie monster grumble, but the problem here is that singer Davey Seibold only has two speeds: on and off. It all sounds the same, really. As far as I can tell, he only has one set of lyrics and is just repeating them over different music. Lets have a little variety please! Mr. Seibold should spend a little time learning from Maynard James Keenan’s performance on Tool’s Opiate. Bring a little of that into the mix, and wow… you’d have an unstoppable force.
Buy the album? Yeah. Do it, because there’s plenty to listen to here and I think that, despite my feelings about the vocals, the instrumental work is worth the cost alone!
