Let's start with an apology for my irredeemable fucktardness: this review should've been in the sack weeks ago, and I would like to thank my editor, the venerable Tim D., and the entire Transform Online support staff for being there for me in my moment of weakness and hurt. This hurt, though, has a lot to do with this review. Folly hail out of New Jersey with a disclaimer of "addictive combustability." Rightly motherfucking so, and I'll tell you why: all the pains I've ever endured have been endured with a mix of alcohol, loose bitches, and devastating punk rock. In my most recent hurt, I turned to Bad Brains for the punk charge. Plenty of emails and voice messages later, I sit down to pen-up Folly… and I'll be damned if there aren't echoes of Bad Brains' aggression in these motherfuckers! This slab ranges from the metal-tinged, the fully distorted, to the tweaks of breakneck reggae/surf guitar. This shit helps! Finding all 12 tracks agreeable seals the deal for me, because the energy is maintained and honest. When did New Jersey get so good? Maybe the ska stuff keeps it from seriously damaging a person's brain. In any case, it makes sense in the fold without ever feeling pushed or boring.
This quintet gels well together and the hardcore gang sing-a-longs are fun. Remember that? Fun hardcore? Well, it's back. Hot and loud, like all good things. And there are grooves here too, don't think the musicianship confines itself to aggression only, though it's the aggression that keeps it grooving. I'm almost 30: is it legal for me to enjoy this? Nonsense: I'm gonna be hardcore till I die, cuz now I can add Folly to my therapy. Hot tracks to drink your woes away to: "Bonfire of the Manatees," "The Wake," "Historian," and "False Evidence Appearing Real." The metal parts make me wanna windmill through a pit, and yeah, I know: ninjas to tha motherfucking back, yo!
