With their last album, Two Conversations, The Appleseed Cast honed their craft and created an interesting and listenable album filled with memorable melodies and landscapes of sound. However, they have missed the mark with their latest, Peregrine.
For me, The Appleseed Cast have always been about blending high quality songwriting with distinctive textures and sounds. On Peregrine, the importance of excellent songwriting seems to have been replaced by the need to experiment with unconventional recording and editing techniques. Therefore, the new songs often seem convoluted and undeveloped.
Like a thin candy coated shell, the bells and whistles that the band tastefully employed in the past are often found on Peregrine in excess. Where, I ask, is that sweet songwriting center that I have learned to savor? Not here, friends, not here.
