No band on the planet has as much fun making good, quality music as Edguy. Case proven by the band's latest and greatest, Rocket Ride, a fusion of epic metal craftsmanship and the band's second album since Tobias Sammet's departure to work on Avantasia. The classical influences remain on this album, but nowhere near the operatic scale of Primal Fear or Stratovarius. And it doesn't lessen the classic ‘80s balls-out metal the band are notorious for. What results is a seamless blend of the characteristics that make power metal such a versatile genre. Edguy seem to be one of the few bands willing to go those extra steps, and clearly they're one of the bands that don't take themselves to seriously.
The versatility of Rocket Ride is easily found in the fifth song, "Return to the Tribe," in which the group hits all cylinders with an epic, sweeping chorus, overwhelming power, speed, and the infusion of orchestral accents and keyboards. What more could you ask for? In full effect, Rocket Ride has all this and more, a literal melting pot of all things power metal into one hour of Edguy at their finest.
For the genre, Edguy have released the album of the year so far. There's always room for improvement, but with a band that has evolved like Edguy, there's no telling what the future holds. Rocket Ride is proof that the train has not derail yet. Edguy play with the knowledge they've gained over the years as well as the hearts of the teenagers who started the band over a decade ago.
