Formerly Bella Lea, ex-Denali front woman returns with a poppier sound.

TransformOnline - Music Review

First of all, let’s get the facts out of the way: Maura Davis is an amazing singer and songwriter. If ever you have the chance, you must go see her new band Ambulette (formerly Bella Lea) perform live. Her hypnotizing voice is one that truly needs to be experienced in the flesh.

With their debut EP The Lottery, Ambulette fill that large gap in our lives left by the break up of the much loved Denali. While not an enormous departure from her previous band, we see the benefits of working with new musicians on tracks like “I’ve Got More” and “When I See You.” These newbies have a slightly poppier sound than her previous work. Maura’s signature style still shines through, however, with the songs “Fall” and “If You Go Away,” complete with dark, sweeping guitar chords and her angelic voice belting out perfect melodies.

This is a solid release from solid musicians. Clocking in at 24 minutes with just five songs, however, it serves just to whet our appetites. For a true treat, check out Ambulette on tour in April, and keep an eye out for a full-length that will undoubtedly come forth from this promising band.
