I had heard of No Trigger before, but only their name and not their music. This is their first full-length, and they play very melodic, modern punk/hardcore. The first thing I noticed was that the production is excellent but not too slick, thanks to recording masters Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore of The Blasting Room. The next thing I noticed was the tight, solid, and frantic drumming and guitar work. Cayoneer is kinda reminiscent of some of the older Fat Wreck Chords bands from the '90s. Fans of Strung Out, Rise Against, Strike Anywhere, and most of all A Wilhelm Scream will probably really like this. Actually, No Trigger sound strikingly like A Wilhelm Scream but without a lot of the unnecessary noodling that turns me off. Normally I like to tear the album apart and critique each member individually by name, but this promo came without artwork, lyrics, or even who is in the band. But I will mention that, like A Wilhelm Scream and Strung Out, the guitar work is certainly notable. But unlike A Wilhelm Scream, it doesn't go on for too long or lose my attention. Personally, I'm happy to see that faster bands are popping up a lot more lately. If you're a fan of the aforementioned bands, you'll probably like this.
The only problem I have with Cayoneer is that, even after listening to it about 10-15 times, I still can hardly remember how any of the songs go. Maybe it's my inner pop punk coming out, but for me the most important thing is a good hook. While I'm listening to Canyoneer, I'm digging the melodies and thinking they're really good, but as soon as I'm done listening I can't remember the songs. Maybe it's me. In the end, I'd still say it's definitely worth checking out.
