It goes without saying: any band out of Norway will inevitably be considered black metal. Then again, I can’t think of a metal name that has come out of the great north other than a black one. So just imagine the surprise when I heard Soothing Torture. Insense take the metalcore sound, which has been made very popular by American bands, and do a better job at it. “Helplessness,” a slow instrumental, starts the album before they really get into their true sound with songs like “I, Deviant” and “Constriction.” Vocally, comparisons can be drawn to Hatebreed with the occasional clear singing. Musically, is has been said that their sound is reminiscent of Meshuggah and Fear Factory. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. A better comparison would be Sepultura’s Chaos A.D. and early Refused, which especially comes across on “Clawing at the Nerve.” A pleasant surprise proving that geography doesn’t always determine a band’s identity.
