It has been a tumultuous few months for Decapitated…. you could almost say that it has been like a daytime soap opera. First off, it was announced that original vocalist Sauron left and Covan from the virtually unknown Atrophia Red Sun joined and is doing the vocals on the upcoming release. Then on the verge of the release of Organic Hallucinosis, bassist extraordinaire Martin left the band, was replaced by Richard Gulczynski who filled in for a North American tour, only to rejoin soon thereafter. Who knows what will transpire in the next episode? One thing has remained steadfast throughout all of the musical chairs, though: Decapitated continue to impress, improve, and add to their extraordinary catalog of music.
Organic Hallucinosis is the strongest release of this band’s young career. Every song is brilliant with catchy riffs, time signatures, and musicianship. Starting with “A Poem About an Old Prison Man” to “Invisible Control,” it is hard to pick out a favorite because each song contains a riff that you will inevitably hum until the next one replaces it. An interesting note about “A Poem About an Old Prison Man” is that the lyrics are from a poem written by Charles Manson while he was in the Vacaville Medical Facility in 1984. The other added addition to Organic Hallucinosis is Covan’s vocals. While Sauron was good, he was too muffled, deep, unintelligible, and monotonous. Covan is deep, but you can still comprehend what he is saying. And although his vocal pitch does not fluctuate, he seems to put more emphasis on curtain words and phrases to make them stand out. The only complaint is that the total running time is 32:44. So be sure to get the two-disc version which contains the DVD of their show at B.B. King’s in New York.
Decapitated continue to prove that Vogg, Martin, and Witek make up one of the best rhythm sections in death metal today.
