Philadelphia has an ever growing music scene, but hardcore and metalcore have mainly spawned from other areas of the east such as Boston, New York, and Virginia. But with the brutally hardcore antics of One Dead Three Wounded trickling out into the mass market, Philadelphia may be the next city to be overtaken by the spreading monster of metalcore.
While One Dead Three Wounded can be filed under the metalcore label, don't be fooled. They're metalcore in the same sense that bands like Remembering Never are. Rather than your Bleeding Throughs and Killswitch Engages – who blend the elements into a semi-watered down version of each genre – One Dead Three Wounded throw some serious hardcore into your face, then come right back at you with some classic metal assault. Providing the perfect blend of aggression, musicianship, and attitude, Paint the Town is a force to be reckoned with.
But while it may have seemed revolutionary when Paint the Town was first recorded, this reissue comes out late as the scene continues to be saturated, leaving One Dead Three Wounded in the crop of undifferentiated bands. Simply put, Paint the Town does nothing to make One Dead Three Wounded a memorable and separate experience than what the genre already has to offer.
While the metalcore junkie may eat this album up, because it’s admittedly good, Paint the Town does nothing for me. It's a "been there, done that" experience that falls into the void. However, seeing as this record can be traced to the band's origins in the early 2000s, before the scene had seemingly began to gain ground, One Dead Three Wounded may surprise with their sophomore album, as long as they can adapt to the changing environment around them. That's what separates the boys from the men, and Paint the Town has all the aggression to suggest that One Dead Three Wounded want to be the latter.
