So I was just reading some internet opinions about Rob Halford coming out and was a little disappointed to find that, in this day and age, tolerance is still hard to come by. I am straight and have absolutely no problems with homosexuals. I live in Miami, FL – a stone's throw away from South Beach – a Mecca for homosexuality, and it is thanks in large part to the thriving homosexual community that South Beach has become. Homosexuality has always been, in one way or another, part of punk rock. That punk has gotten more and more narrow-minded as time has gone by is undeniable, but for a period, it actually embraced the real outcasts.
1991 and enter San Francisco's Pansy Division, the first fully “out” punk act in history. And boy could they play: funny punk rock gems penned with the dexterity of a band that understands itself as it grows. With a dozen or so singles (Touch My Joe Camel, For Those About to Suck Cock... We Salute You, Bill & Ted's Homosexual Adventure, etc.) and seven full-lengths (Deflowered, More Lovin' From Our Oven, Total Entertainment!, etc.), it's kinda hard to put together a telling retrospective. But with a DVD included in the package to supplement the 30 tracks culled from their 15 years of existence, The Essential will do. The DVD has videos, TV interviews, and live footage. The CD has classics like "Who Treats You Right?", "Fem in a Black Leather Jacket," "Luv Luv Luv," "Cocksucker Club," "Homo Christmas," and the hilarious "He Whipped My Ass in Tennis (Then I Fucked His Ass in Bed)."
These pioneers of punk rock/queer-core transcend the labeling and rock out harder than most. Maybe a Judas Priest covers EP with Rob Halford guesting?
