Control. When you listen to Natalie Rose LeBrecht’s most recent release, Imagining Weather (actually, I guess it’s her “first” release, as she was formerly known as Greenpot Bluepot), the one undeniable fact is that she’s got control. Over her instruments, over what she wants to do musically, over the very direction of everything that lies within the album. She has massive and total control over what sounds like a very loose The Back Heart Procession. What comes across as random and moody and dark and directionless, still maintains total control and direction. What exactly that direction is, well, only the crooning Natalie Rose can tell you. You just have to listen to it yourself to be sure of what you can take away from it. Musically speaking, it is solid. The former Ms. Greenpot Bluepot will take you and try to lull you into a sleepy dreamworld of whale-like singing and majestic, atmospheric tonality.
That being said, however, I don’t think this has any place in the broader musical catalogue. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that I think it’s self-indulgent music created solely for the artist’s own purposes. Badly beat-poetic at times, it’s just not my cup o' tea, and I’ll be so bold as to say I have some pretty eclectic tastes. Sorry Bluepot, if you left out the lyrics and most of the singing (you can leave in some of the gentler wails), you might have something beautiful here. Most of the musical grace and beauty gets spoiled by avant garde vocal wandering (and oral wanking). I do think, though, that this can be refined into something great one day.
