Oberlin student Jonathan Pfeffer might be spending a little more time cooked-up in his room than hitting the books, but it's yielding a pleasant output, since this multi-instrumentalist is most certainly not hitting the collegiate bong of procrastination. No, Pfeffer is most certainly active in what he deems priority number one: good music. So after spending the better part of his undergrad time putting together a shit load of songs, he finally committed them to a full-length recording. And though Fragments might be a bit misleading, it is true to its definition.
Pfeffer is most certainly savvy in his musical tastes and is hip enough to blend it together into an impressive folder where metal meets flamenco, jazz, math, pop, and open-ended experimentation. Recording all the instruments individually and aligning them in a painstaking editing process, it is evident that – regardless the instrument – he's attuned to the sound in his mind. Everything gels seamlessly with the proper inflection and raging moments of abrasiveness.
The opener one-two punch of "Tickling Ghosts" parts I and II sets up an inviting platform. These are 10 thoroughly enjoyable tracks. Easy repeats: "Mid-Coital Seizure," "A Hundred Pages of Cannot be Named," and "Pillars Disintegrate." Check the tours link on their site since he'll be shimmying up the East coast with a backing band through the month of January. He might be setting out to save instrumental music from the "pedants," but he's definitely creating memorable tunes. This is focused restlessness: this is wild instrumental rock oozing with fun!
