Much like death metal, black metal has gone down the all-too-familiar path of becoming boring and stagnant. Bands are reluctant or just not talented enough to push creativity and texture to the forefront, instead falling right in line with everyone else. Khold have veered away from this path and have molded a unique sound that lets them define themselves instead of being defined by a generic style. Yes, they are a black metal band from Norway, but they also mix mid tempo grooves with a dark and sinister mood. Khold have realized that it takes more than some white face paint and polka beats to be “evil.” Krek is refreshing, much in the way Morgoth’s Odium was when it was released. While the musical styles of the two are different, both use a slower, eerie pace that possesses your ears. Krek is deceivingly simplistic, which is how the band characterizes themselves, but the attack is still robust and sophisticated. Sung in their native Norwegian tongue, vocalist Gard only adds to the deep, dark animal that is Khold.
