TransformOnline - Music Review

Today’s hard rock / metal features a smorgasbord of styles. The chains of standardized cookie cutter radio have been broken on the strength of diversity and versatile influences. The most evident example of this liberation today is From Autumn To Ashes.

Intro chords reminiscent of old school Metallica, verses and bridges laced with Sepultura inspiration, and tempo changes comparable to the likes of Suicidal Tendencies, From Autumn To Ashes are quite possibly the most wicked piece to the puzzle of metal today. So many jagged edges around this piece, it may take years for anyone to place the potential longevity of this once small Long Island, NY talent. For instance, the spectrum between tracks four through nine is so moody and collaged that the old cliché reaction of labeling the band “emocore” comes naturally. In the same breath, the grit and determination of these melted genres are nowhere near the science of emo. The driving forces just seem to attack differently than that of simple categories.

“Short For Show” is by far the golden link here, showcasing the real backbone of this band: the drums. Drummer Francis Mark is a heart attack-inducing talent who pounds away like a speed freak at the beginning of a four-day binge, holding nothing back. The best track for somber vibes here will be the closing title cut, which begins on a piano plank. As the song progresses, the lyrics of a raspy soul step out to the awaiting distorted and electric sound. Though you don’t look here for an overall understanding of From Autumn To Ashes, it surely magnifies just how Jekyl and Hyde they can be.

Thrashcore at most glances, shockingly contemporary pop / rock during other views, From Autumn To Ashes are without a doubt a leading link in the new and further diversified chain of the music industry.
