After the first five ceremonial listens, I am still wondering exactly what Number One Gun have to offer the world of rock and roll. Forget all the strips of genre proclamation, these guys shade the line of way too many genres to possibly categorize. While some might think this to be an advantage (it sometimes is), in the case of this release, it only spotlights a lack of identity.
Sure, lots of memorable choruses, etc... junk, junk, junk. For instance, the intro “We Are” is an upbeat piece featuring a very sneaky chorus: from low pitch sentences to the high pitch repetitive hook line “we are, we are.” However, lollipop awards can be handed out as the album progresses nicely for those who dig this unmasked sound. They’ve certainly got a natural understanding of melodies, explosively gritty and consistent.
Cleverly, yet almost whorish, these tracks seem to be mostly divided up into chord breaks. As you now suspect, to review this album in any standardized effort would be an exercise in futility. So let’s get down to brass tacks, shall we (ha! that’s two Pulp Fiction quotes in a row)? Should you purchase, expect many peaks and valleys of emotional pop rock laced with lyrical lost love, frustration, and the occasional synthesizer work. But as I mentioned before, the problem you may encounter is finding an identity in each individual track.
