Karl Larsson is the main force behind Swedish jangly indiepop sensations Last Days Of April. I, Tim Den, am a huge fan of Last Days Of April. So I should love Karl’s solo debut, right? GODDAMN RIGHT! While Pale as Milk isn’t as orchestral elaborate as Angel Youth or as emotionally powerful as If You Lose It (two of Last Days Of April’s best), it isn’t meant to compete with his full-time gig. Cuz even though Karl is basically Last Days Of April, certain expectations and mindset come with every “band” album that he must compose. As a reaction to all the pressure, Karl wrote and recorded Pale as Milk very quickly, exercising his muse without straining her. The results sound the part: trademark sweet-and-sour hooks that celebrate as much as mope, much more carefree and exuberant than past efforts. The spontaneity that gave birth to these songs is evident in the simple arrangements, short running times, and limited refrains per track. Most songs repeat one or two ideas for a bit then quickly bow out. Good thing too, cuz these spur-of –the-moment creations would outstay their welcome otherwise. As is, they give you just enough of a fix as you wait for Last Days Of April to painstakingly create their next record.
