One-off projects can occasionally be charming in their spontaneity: even good sometimes, but more often than not, they’re best kept to the drunken jam sessions that inspire them. Nations By The River’s Holes in the Valley is no exception. Like a twee and out-of-key stab at Gram Parsons, these members of Australia’s The Sleepy Jackson and Gelbison crank out a pile of absurdly lighthearted and trite campfire singalongs. Only “These are the Days” and “Lovers” hint at any kind of potential. Granted, bad judgment is not foreign to major label execs, but one still has to wonder how this one made it to the shelves.
