Where would iTunes be without bands like Gorillaz? No, that’s not just hyperbole; I mean that. Yeah, Gorillaz may be the new millennium’s answer to The Monkees, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t churn out hooks like Wisconsin does butter. That said, their latest full-length, Demon Days, doesn’t quite measure up to their eponymous debut (voiceover talent of Dennis Hopper notwithstanding), but this is still one goddamn catchy album. Strong tracks like “Kids With Guns” (featuring the sultry Neneh Cherry?!?), “Dirty Harry,” and “Feel Good Incorporated” will help Gorillaz keep a hold of their fan base while winning over new converts. Overall, the absence of Dan “The Automator” Nakamura on the team may have cost them some of the cross-over potential they had on previous releases, but Damon Albarn is able to bring out the charm of new collaborator Dangermouse’s retro-sounding (Trio-esque?) beats. And with bumpin’ bass, edgy guitars, and a children’s choir, Demon Days should keep iTunes safe from the forces of entropy and ignominy for at least another year.
