When guitarist Erik Rutan departed Morbid Angel, no one flinched. Morbid Angel is about more than its members. Little did we know that this separation would lead to the creation of Hate Eternal! Rutan has become a figurehead in the world of death metal and I, Monarch will continue to lead him down that path. While death metal has become somewhat watered down throughout the years, bands such as Hate Eternal continue to add flavor, ingenuity, and musicianship to stand out in this saturated genre.
I, Monarch will splatter your ears with emotion, focused aggression, and chaotic grooves along with some rare soundscapes that are not traditionally heard in death metal. Songs such as “To Know Our Enemies” and “Sons of Darkness” add catchiness through instruments and sounds that would usually be heard in the outback of Australia. Rutan’s vocals also resonate more then ever through out I, Monarch. Along with bassist Randy Piro’s high end vocals, song such as “Behold Judas” and “The Plague of Humanity” come through with a surge of energy reminiscent of early Deicide. Also adding to the texture of sounds is the title track that enters like a Vincent Price horror flick before the mesmerizing brutality blossoms. I, Monarch will undoubtedly go down as one of the most creative and complete death metal albums of the year.
