Looking at the cover of The Epoxies’ second album, Stop the Future, I experience two things: 1) why is this woman dressed like Milla Jovovich in The Fifth Element / why is her make-up like that Sex Pistols devotee Sue Catwoman and 2) this better not be some contrived Bow Wow Wow shit. Glammy, techie, buzzy, and synthesized; The Epoxies are most certainly no contrived Bow Wow Wow shit.
Lead singer Roxy Epoxy does a great job driving through these 13 tracks of punk-rooted New Wave. While you could compare them to a whole bunch of one-hit wonders from the ‘80s, they remind me more of the longevity behind Devo’s success (i.e. actual knowledge of musicianship) and recent exploits by Manda And The Marbles.
Backed by the colorful cast of Fritz M. Static (synths/vox), Viz Spectrum (guitar), Ray Cathode (drums), and Shock Diode (bass/vox), stupid names aside, The Epoxies manage something that eluded many a New Wave band: a solid, filler-free, full-length. Fat Mike hits another nail firmly in the head with the addition of this squad into the Fat Wreck roster.
The raunchy “Wind Me Up,” the faux retro humorous sneer of “Everything Looks Better on Video,” the alien invasion surf instro of the title track, and the rock and roll of “At the Seams.” Carefully balanced tracks exude Roxy’s raw sexuality somewhere in the middle of Debbie Harry’s doll and Siouxsie’s in-charge attitudes on top of solid playing. Synth effects are appropriate to the tracks and all instrumentation exists on an even keel.
Balanced, sexy, catchy.
