As I gave My Epiphany’s Miribilia its initial spin and skimmed through their one-sheet, I became instantly agitated. Apparently this Nashville-based band is to be filed under the “punk” genre. This wouldn’t usually be a problem, except in this case I can’t figure out how or why.
The best way to describe My Epiphany’s music would be to take the electro rock route. I have no idea who came up with the “punk” description, cuz I don’t see it: not even vaguely. And if you’re gonna get into all the semantics of punk being more about a way of life vs. the music, then, well, go fuck yourself. This is a music review, not a fucking personality test. So that’s my beef with that. Perhaps I should get on with the review now.
Miribilia actually isn’t all that half bad of an album. With a lively upbeat start, the record has mellow moments that create quite an ambient and chill mood. The tones are both aggressive and ethereal throughout the album, a combination that I’ve always argued “when done right, works incredibly well.” Though My Epiphany has yet to perfect this with their own style, they’re definitely on their way.
The band gets kudos for creative effort and mixing things up a bit. Miribilia is hardly predictable, which is quite impressive considering the genre the band has affiliated itself with. Who knows, maybe some of their spontaneity will rub off on the others.
