A foul mouth and a lot of white boy blues.

TransformOnline - Music Review

Friends and Nervous Breakdowns is decent underground hip hop shit coming out of upstate NY. Weerd Science is essentially Josh Eppard, who – if you have a lot of music knowledge – is also the drummer for Coheed And Cambria. This is not just some new side project, though, as it has been in the works for about 10-11 years. “Wow” is what I have to say about that. How he can do both schedule-wise is beyond me, but hey: if you can do it… “GIT R DON!”

Some good shit on here, with Josh ripping some cool, witty, and real sick lyrics. Although he claims to come from a slew of white dork kids, he gets dirtier than dirty, filthier than filthy, and tougher than tough. But would you call it thug nation? No, thank god. There is way too much of that crap out nowadays. There is definite anger present, but more of emotions and well-thought out rhymes about real shit. This is heard especially on the sickest song called “Girl, Your Baby’s Worm Food.” This is one of those “funny, but not really funny” songs about some girl he knows who got knocked up by one of his friends. Apparently this isn’t the first time she’s been knocked up – “the chick has a kid every time she farts” – so he’s pissed that she’s gonna go through with having the baby. The semi funny part of it is the chorus, which sounds like it’s being sung by C-Lo with his best R&B smooth voice. “Girrrrl, I had to tell you something. Heeeyyy, if you’re really knocked up by my homey I’m gonna punch you in the stomach.” A real serious issue: yes, but some filthy comedy as well. This is straight up underground hip hop, with no jiggy dance songs (sorry Big Willie) or songs about blingin’ it up, drinking crystal and fucking bitches (sorry 50). It’s mostly just him telling how he’s a mistake kid who should have been on a “cum rag,” talking about how he has been rapping for a while as a white trash kid from upstate NY, hating on backstabbing friends, dissing girls (especially exs who fucked with him), and giving a big FUCK YOU to the music industry (“Fuck You and Your Filthy A&R Dept.”). Yeah, I don’t think Josh’s ma is psyched to hear all these profanities and swearing. But again, don’t take it as hate, as it’s filled with a ton of jokes and tongue-and-cheek rhymes.

A lot of songs on here include really cool and not cheesy picking guitar sounds, which is nice to hear. Most of the beats have that sorta creepy vibe to them, using some eery organ noises or string samples, but are all in all decent. The album cover and inside liner notes look like they were thrown together on lined paper, but once you listen to it you will know that it’s not just some high school kid messing around with his beat machine and recorder.

Wow, first Sage Francis on Epitaph and now this? What’s going on, diversity in labels? Good! God forbid, you haters! Enjoy it: your shitty band may just benefit from it.

Brian posted the following Constructive Criticism: Good review, though I wouldnt say FIRST Sage Francis on Epitaph... Shit even Atmosphere released something on Epitaph before Francis long over drawn project. Though worth the wait. Regardless.. Weerd Science wasnt bad, but Im not so sure I would put it in either of the aforementioned artists neighborhood either. -brian
