Not only are Doris Henson the best band with a horn section consisting of a single trombone since Snuff (or perhaps the only), but Give Me All Your Money solidifies their status as one of the best acts to come out of Kansas City in a long time. Starting with “Pollen Tom” and proceeding well into the album, Doris Henson crank out one tune after another of self-confident arena-cum-indie rock a la Archers Of Loaf or Cheap Trick doing Bowie. Guitarist/vocalist Matt Dunehoo crafts wave-like melodies for boisterous lines like “I want the most from what I’ve got” and “I’ve got plans for a big future.” It’s mostly anthems and mystifyingly catchy hooks until “Dead Stars.” While it keeps pace with the songs previous, its Interpol-ish chorus carries a twinge of melancholy that follows into “Sidestepping” and really hits with the closer, “When You Go.” At eight-and-a-half minutes, it’s the longest and most dour tune on the record, but makes for a satisfying finish. Overall, Give Me All Your Money is a great album and avoids the pretension embodied by most bands of Doris Henson’s ilk. Plans for a big future look to be working out just fine.
