New Mexican Disaster Squad rip through three thrashy hardcore numbers on their side, as well as a faithful cover of Bad Brains’ “Fearless Vampire Killers.” Do I love Bad Brains? Yes I do. Do I love New Mexican Disaster Squad? Yes I do. Discernible, heavy hardcore in the fine vein of DC hardcore pioneers Government Issue crossed with Agnostic Front and Cause For Alarm. “It’s Called Integrity” and “Social Divorce” move you quick with fast riffing, melodic breakdowns, and metal tinges. “Porcelain End” clocks in at three and-a-half minutes, displaying NMDS’s sensible enough to compose tracks that don’t necessarily blow your eardrums out.
Western Addiction was a nice pairing in this release (remember when bands would split 7”ers and LPs? Whatever happened to those? Faith/Void, Spazz/Romantic Gorilla, Agathocles/Man Is The Bastard anyone?). Western Addiction has melodies running throughout the inherent brutality of its hardcore. I like the desperation in the vocals; I enjoy hardcore when it is pressing and in my face. Keeping in the spirit of reflecting DC hardcore, I’ll rank Western Addiction with Void and Faith. They close their side with a cover of Naked Raygun’s “Rat Patrol,” and their “Spider in England” is a good morning starter. A good release with a good price and very nice artwork emphasizing the California vs. Florida nature of this album... leaves me wanting more from both sides.
