Solid and with guaranteed re-playability.

This DVD is a must for any fan of the groundbreaking art-punk outfit known as Devo. The hats, the suits, the quirk, the psychobabble, it is all here. And it goes down in Japan 25 years after they last performed there. The crowd is a sea of crazy, chanting, fists in the air Japanese who sing along to every song.

The quality of the recording is excellent, with both sound and visuals in tip-top shape. Mild aliasing occurs every-now-and-then but solely due to stage lighting. Devo puts on a solid show including crowd faves (“Whip It” and “Satisfaction”), as well as other hot tunes like “Jocko Homo,” “That’s Good,” and “Gates of Steel.”

An added bonus is the inclusion of a Target Video clip of them performing “Gut Feeling” in 1980. They also perform that song in the Japanese set. And what are there, like a billion people in that Tokyo arena? Japanese fans are true fans, there’s no denying that.

Cool extras include Devo interacting in Tokyo and a few interviews with Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald V. Casale (and two lounging, slightly overweight pugs, really). Another cool clip is them chatting with their Japanese version, Polysics. Solid DVD, Devo is always enjoyable, so mark this one for guaranteed re-playability.

Oh, and Devo talking about sushi? That’s the spud’s sweet center.
