In 2003, Reeve Oliver managed to walk away with the San Diego Music Award for Best Rock Album, despite having only released a six-song EP. Now they are back with a self-titled full length. Many of you may know guitarist Sean O'Donnell from his work in Dogwood, as well as bass player O from his work in Fluf. Along with their friend and drummer Brad Davis, the trio are making a name for themselves in Reeve Oliver. The first track, “I Want Burns,” starts off with the welcoming, warm-hearted sound of an acoustic guitar. My first reaction? I instantly thought of Foo Fighters. In fact, most of the album reminds me of them, as well as influences such as Elliot Smith and Dinosaur Jr. It would be difficult to go through each track individually, seeing as each song is so diverse from its predecessor… but one thing I can say is that this record is very promising. One can easily listen to the entire thing without having to skip over any tracks. The constant melodies, harmonization, and plentiful guitar riffs found throughout the album turn this band into the perfect definition of a true rock group. Combining indie rock with pop rock, Reeve Oliver have certainly found their niche. There is no doubt in my mind that each member of this band must have put their heart and soul into this record. The album sounds as if it was written, recorded, and mastered by perfectionists who thrive off of passion and determination. Even for those who refuse to admit they have a soft side, I recommend that you check out Reeve Oliver. I guarantee you'll be hearing much more about them in the future.
